Profile of Professor Atsumbe, Bernard Numgwo

image1Atsumbe, Bernard Numgwo is a Professor of Vocational and Technology Education and the Dean, School of Science and Technology Education, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, Nigeria. Some of his prior work experience includes; Deputy Dean, School of Science and Technology Education, Sub Dean School of Science and Science Education, member, Senate representative on the board of University intellectual property. Chairman, University Christian community, Chairman, University staff school standard monitoring committee, member of the board of University postgraduate school, member board of University staff school and examination malpractice committee.  Departmental postgraduate co-ordinator, Head of unit, Metalwork Technology, Industrial and Technology Education Department among others. Professor Atsumbe is a registered member of International Vocational Education Training Association [IVETA], Nigerian Association of Teachers of Technology [NATT], Association for Promoting Quality Education in Nigeria [APQEN] and National Association for Curriculum Theories [NACT].

Professor Atsumbe is interested in the following research areas; Curriculum development and evaluation, design of teaching methods in technology education, research method and data processing, vocational guidance and career education, mechanical technology (machine shop practice), foundry technology, occupational safety and environment. He was the overall best graduating student during his first-degree programme in Ahmadu Bello University [ABU] Zaria. Overall best graduating doctoral student in the Department of Vocational Technical Education and in the faculty of Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka [UNN] in 2002. He has taught courses such as; advance machining, foundry process, engineering drawing, theories of vocational and career development, industrial organization and human resources management, foundation of vocational and technical education, facility planning in vocational and technical education, course construction in vocational and technical education. He has successfully supervised and graduated 3 PhD students and over 15 M.Tech students. He has assessed 7 academics to the rank of Professor and over 10 to the rank of Associate Professor from different Universities.

Prof Atsumbe has presented several technology education base papers within the country and in countries like Germany, Cyprus, South Africa and Swaziland. He is a regular paper presenter and Chairperson, syndicate group at the annual international conference on Mathematics, Science and Technology Education, organised by Institute for Science and Technology Education, University of South Africa [UNISA]. He has authored two textbooks, co- authored one and with several chapters in books. He has over fifty publications in both international and national refereed journals. He is a member of editorial board of over 10 different journals with high impact factor and a reviewer for over 15 journals across the globe. An external examiner for both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in several Universities.

Professor Atsumbe is actively involved in various community services such as; Chairperson and member, National University Commission [NUC] accreditation panel, Chairman and member National Commission for Colleges of Education [NCCE] accreditation team, Consultant to Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council on curriculum revision and critique, external examination monitor for National Examination Council [NECO], resource person for African Development Bank [ADB] project on curriculum review for technical and vocational education, Chairman, National Board for Technical Education [NBTE] accreditation team and examination watch group for Joint Admission and Matriculation Board [JAMB] among others.
