BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL
The school was officially approved at the 366th Senate Meeting of Federal University of Technology, Minna on Tuesday, 6th November, 2012. The then School Technology Education was carved out from School of Science and Science Education. The pioneer Dean, Prof. V.I. Ezenwa was appointed in October, 2012. The Deputy Dean and Sub-Dean of the new School were Dr. E.J. Ohize and Dr. G. U. Oyedum respectively. The School was later renamed School of Science and Technology Education in 2014 with three departments: Industrial Technology Education (ITE); Science Education Departments and Library Information Technology (LIT). The senate approved the establishment of the Department of Educational Technology and Department of Communication Technology in the school. With this development, the total number of departments in the school rose to five. However, in the 2015/16 academic session, Department of Library and Information Technology was moved to School of Information and Communication Technology (SICT).
HIGHLIGHT OF ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE SCHOOL
International Academic Conferences
The school hosted its ground breaking 1st International Conference with the theme “Science and Technology Education in the Transformation of Developing Nations” between 6th and 10th October, 2013. It also published the Book of Conference proceedings. The School successfully hosted its 2nd International Conference between 12th and 15th October, 2014 at CPES hall in Bosso Campus. In spite of the semester examinations, the conference was a huge success in terms of paper presentations and attendance. The theme of the conference “Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Science and Technology Education for Self-Reliance” was carefully selected in response to the unemployment syndrome that is ravaging the nation and the whole globe. The 3rd International conference took place in October, 2015 with the theme “Enhancing Information Management, Science and Technology Education through Interactive Multi Media and Hyper Media Instructions” The 4th International conference has been scheduled to hold between 4th and 7th October, 2016. The Theme of the conference is “21st Century Global Changes in Education: Implication for Sustainable Development”.
Research and Publications
Staff were engaged in academic research and many publications emanated from there. In addition to the existing Journal of Science, Technology, Mathematics Education (JOSMED), the School now has a Journal titled: “Journal of Information, Education, Science and Technology (JIEST)”. It has been receiving national and international patronage from academics. The journal publishes only articles of repute in Education, Science, Information, Technology, Communication and related fields, bi-annually.
The following institutions have their programmes affiliated to the School of Science and Technology Education. The institutions are:
i. Federal College of Education, Akoka, Lagos State
ii. Federal College of Education, Potiskum, Yobe State and
iii. Kaduna Polytechnic, Kaduna State.
The institutions are awarding B.Tech in various programmes affiliated to the University. The School has vetted and moderated various programmes especially the examination results of the affected institutions.
The School had a total of one thousand three hundred and seventy-two (1,372) students at inception in 2012/2013 academic session. At the beginning of 2014/2015 the students’ enrollment figure stood at one thousand six hundred and seventy-six (1,676) as shown in Table 1 and Figure 1. Educational Technology Department has also taken off with effect from 2015/2016 academic session, while Communication Education Department is still awaiting Resource Accreditation.
